The external skin of Selfridges consists of a sprayed concrete
shell, insulated externally and protected by a deep blue waterproofing
layer. The 600mm diameter spun aluminium discs are securely fixed to threaded steel bars cast into the concrete. Horizontal rows of 282 discs are evenly spaced around the perimeter, with their spacing carefully adjusted to suit the curvature of the building.
